Some
people don't settle for the gauge of their piercing once it's
healed. They keep stretching the hole, making it larger and
larger. Stretching is a creative way to change the appearance
of your body piercing. If you start out with an eighteen or
sixteen gauge, after the piercing is fully healed, you can
go back and have your piercer insert a thicker gauge, such
as a fourteen or a twelve. Once that size heals, you can go
down even further, to a ten or an eight. You can gradually
work your way down to a 00 gauge-and beyond! Another way of
stretching your body piercing is to use an insertion taper,
which has a fine point on one end and gradually flares out;
the thicker part is slowly pushed through your ear, widening
your hole. Your professional piercer can also supply you with
a weight to hang from your piercing that will have the same
effect.
Body Jewelry - The diameter
measures the distance inside a ring; this corresponds to length
in the case of a barbell. Because certain piercing swell a
great deal when you first get them, you will go through two
or more sizes of jewelry. For the initial piercing, the piercer
must select jewelry that is wide enough, in the case of a
ring, or long enough, in the case of a barbell, to allow for
any tissue inflammation. Once the swelling has subsided, you
will downsize to a better-fitting piece of jewelry. A common
example of downsizing is tongue piercings, which require at
least two sizes of barbells-one size for the anticipated swelling
and one for the final outcome.
